Epoxy resin floors can be a core part of any industrial space. They are durable, offer good chemical resistance, and can endure heavy traffic well – but finding the right warehouse flooring options can be tricky in December 2024.

Epoxy Resin floor finishes are extremely robust, seamless, low maintenance and chemically resistant, which is why they can be found in most industrial facilities, to protect existing concrete substrates from the harsh daily environment of live operations.

Table of Contents

Fork lifts, trollies, scissor lifts, and other types of mechanical traffic often cause threat to a concrete substrate. A two-pack epoxy high build coating, helps to reduce this threat, by protecting the concrete. Once cured, an epoxy high build coating provides a hard-wearing protection, often exceeds 50 N/mm2 in compressive strength, much higher than the concrete substrate itself!

Epoxy high build coatings provide a gloss finish, is extremely low maintenance, as it is seamless it is extremely easy to clean. The high gloss finish also creates the illusion of more space within a facility.

Epoxy coatings can all be used to ensure that health and safety regulations are met, as unlike a concrete substrate, different aggregate grades can be added to the seal coat, to match ANY slip test requirements.

FeRFA, the resin flooring industry body classifies an Epoxy High Build Coating as a medium duty type 2 floor finish, as it is installed at around 300 microns thick, making this floor finish acceptable for regular foot traffic, frequent fork lift truck traffic, and hard plastic-wheeled trolleys.

Should you wish to further increase the durability of your floor, you may decide to increase the thickness of the epoxy resin being applied up to 2-3mm. This is classified as an Epoxy Self Leveller, or 2mm thick epoxy floor. This is classified as a heavy-duty floor by FeRFA, and is equipped to receive constant fork lift truck traffic, hard plastic wheeled trolleys and some impact.

As well as the longevity of the 2-3mm Epoxy Self Leveller or Flow applied Epoxy, your facility will also benefit aesthetically, as a lot of the undulations and damaged sections of concrete are well covered.

Epoxy floors can be manufactured in any RAL colour, so you are not limited in terms of creativity.

Our floor coating experts can help you find the right chemically resistant, hard-wearing floor finish for your industrial settings, as well as any commercial setting that needs something more than a basic concrete floor. Our skills and experience make it easy for us to find suitable epoxy coatings and resin flooring options.

Why Get an Epoxy Resin Floor?

An Epoxy floor is critical in terms of protecting your existing concrete substrate from the daily wear and tear of production. But there are many factors to take into account when specifying an epoxy High Build Coating, or a 2mm or 3mm Epoxy Floor.

Types of Epoxy Floors

There are different types of Epoxy Floors that all offer different advantages and life spans

Epoxy Floor Seal: usually solvent or waterborne, Epoxy floor seals are clear, and applied directly to freshly laid concrete to seal the slab and eradicate dust from the service. Often a short terms solution that requires annual application.

Water based Epoxy: Water based epoxies are usually applied at around 150 microns thick in one or two coats. It is a moisture permeable solution that is often applied to cementitious levelling screeds before a high build coatings, or to slabs which have issues with moisture control or curing.

Epoxy High Build Coating: Epoxy Coatings are usually roller applied between 200-300 microns thick in two coats. They are two pack products that are generally solvent free. This is the most common application in the industrial setting.

Epoxy Self Leveller 2mm or 3mm: An epoxy self leveller is flow applied with a trowel at 2mm or 3mm thick. It is a combination of epoxy resin and a fine filler sand. They have a smooth surface, and usually require and additional epoxy top coat if slip resistance is required. They have a life span of 70 10 years in an industrial setting.

Epoxy Resin Screed: An epoxy resin screed is a combination of Epoxy Resin and Quartz aggregate of various sizes, that created a stiff screed which is designed for very heavily trafficked environments.

This variety makes it easy to find an option that suits you. Our resin work can be bespoke to each customer, down to the exact colour you need.

 Epoxy Resin Flooring costs

The cost of epoxy resin flooring on average in the UK is in between £7 and £15 per m2, that covers the cost of the floor coating.

Warehouse flooring costs can be influenced by many factors, including size of the project, the chosen specification of the resin flooring, location and much more. Take a look below to see the average costs of different epoxy resin flooring types:

Floor Coating £7 – £15 per m2 (£11 per m2 average)

High performance £50 – £100 per m2 (£75 per m2 average)

Where Should You Use Epoxy Resin Floors?

Resin flooring has a lot of excellent benefits, and a good floor coating can enhance your existing concrete floors into a strong, self-smoothing and hard-wearing surface. So where do we recommend installing an Epoxy Floor?

Is it worth putting epoxy on a garage floor?

Epoxy flooring protects the underlying concrete from moisture, stains, grease and cracks. In the long run, this can save you a great deal on cleaning and maintenance costs by eliminating the need to clean carpet or grout. It’s also very reasonably priced for the duration and level of protection that it offers.

Warehouses

A warehouse will often traffic a concrete substrate without any protection, such as an Epoxy High Build Coating. Our Flooring Installers can mechanically prepare, and over coat existing concrete to provide adequate protection to the slab, as well as to overcome many different safety issues, like dangerous chemicals or slips in wet areas. They also help protect the existing concrete floor from mechanical traffic, such as fork lifts and trollies.

Clean Room (Hygienic) Flooring

Floors used in pharmaceutical environments to be “Clean Room Approved” and comply with the specific parameters and ISO classification.

Epoxy Resin Floor finished for clean rooms, prevent the spread of bacteria. This is because the epoxy resin floor finishes when applied at 2-3mm thick, offer a completely seamless and non-germ harbouring surface that is clean room approved. Our Floor finishes in a clean room environment also offer great advantages over traditional flooring such as vinyl, as it doesn’t not have any joints in which bacteria can harbour, and for this reason it is also very easy to clean.

Caustic solutions and strong cleaning chemicals are often used in clean room environments, and that is why the high chemical resistance of Epoxy Floors offer great benefit when compared to traditional sheet flooring in clean room environments.

Kerb to wall or coving details are also critical in clean room areas. With Epoxy Flooring systems you can use a seamless coving mortar to over come the existing problems with joints in kerbs and cloving when using traditional steel or pre-fabricated PVC coving.

Finally, slip resistance is essential for clean rooms, and with an epoxy resin floor finish, an end user is able to reach their specific requirements, as this is an onsite application as opposed to a pre-fabricated process, which involves dispersing fine aggregate that can be easily increased or decreased depending on client requirements.

Epoxy Flooring for Greenhouses and Indoor Farms

Greenhouses, Cannabis Farms and agricultural buildings require pre-specified flooring requirements that help the building remain efficient. Floors within these buildings often have to be durable, UV Stable, flexible, and light-reflecting. Epoxy Resin flooring offers all of the above.

Conductive Surfaces

We supply Epoxy ESD and Anti-static flooring. Dissipative flooring systems prevent the build-up of static discharge – dissipating any static charge before it becomes harmful. Conductive system will conduct static energy from a single point, back to an earthing point. Conductive systems are much more complex and a dissipative floors and require copper grids and electrical authorisation. Epoxy ESD and anti-static floors are much more robust than traditional anti-static floors such as rubber tiles. They also provide many of the benefits that standard epoxy floors do, such as being seamless and easy to clean. We install both Anti-static Resin floor coatings and Anti-static Resin Self Levellers.

Slip Resistant Resin Flooring (Anti-Slip)

Resin Floors can be installed to specific slip resistance requirements. The slip resistance in an Epoxy Resin Floor is achieved by distributing quartz aggregate into the system. You can distribute a greater amount, or add a larger and more coarse aggregate to achieve higher slip resistance.

All of the systems that we install meet the requirements from the HSE in terms of slip resistance and Pendulum tests.

At Epoxy Resin Flooring, we can assist you on the best specifications, costs and prices. Make sure you contact us today for a number of great Epoxy Resin Flooring solutions.

UV Stable Epoxy

Flooring can be used in areas that directly connect to outdoor spaces, but having good UV protection allows them to avoid discolouring or yellowing in direct sunlight. UV stable seal coats can be applied to an epoxy resin flooring system, to protect its pigment for a long-lasting finish.

This UV-stable flooring is critical in client-facing areas, such as receptions, offices, walk ways, and main entrances. We use efficient and cost-effective techniques to achieve this.

Types of Epoxy Resin Finishes

Epoxy resin floors don’t just have to be a block colour that you so often see in industrial premises. We also offer the below finishes:

What is self levelling Epoxy?

Self levelling epoxy is the result of mixing resin and hardener that comes in separate bottles. After the two mixtures are combined, the mixture is poured on a surface where it flows to level itself out to be an 1/8 thick. It then cures to become a hard clear surface that’s scratch and water resistant.

What is clear epoxy resin used for?

Epoxy resin uses include:

Coating Bar tops, Coating Counters, Encapsulation, Fiberglass laminating, making clear models, prototypes, jewelry, figurines, etc.

What is ambient temperature?

Ambient temperature is the air temperature of any object or environment where equipment is stored, it is often referred to as Room temperature.

Would Resin Flooring be suitable for a Residential Property?

Epoxy flooring is long-lasting and durable, it is five times thicker than normal paint, is waterproof and has excellent abrasion and chemical resistance. This means it can cope with high volumes of footfall and with heavy equipment and products being moved around. We would suggest an epoxy flooring in a residential property were it would fit, we think the investment for epoxy flooring that would last 10 years or more would be a great idea.

What is metallic pigment used for?

Metallic Pigments can be used with clear epoxy resin to refinish old floors, worktops and tabletops to give them a new lease of life.
